Public to avoid opening emails from senders they do not know.

As people rely more and more on electronic banking, related fraud increases.

Captain Lydia Dikolomela, spokesperson for Florida Police Station gives the following safety tips to help the public avoid becoming victims of internet fraud.

• Avoid doing banking on computers to which the general public has access.

• Do not open emails if you are not familiar with the sender.

• Remember that no financial institution would request for login details via email.

• Install up to date anti-virus and anti-spyware on your computer.

• Install adequate phishing filters and do regular checks for foreign software.

Ways fraudsters commit their crimes using the internet include:

• Placing key loggers on the computer tower to record all your keystroke information.

• Sending an email with key logger software as an attachment.

• Phishing: sending you an email that appears to come from the bank or institutions such as Sars with all the colors and logos present, which makes it difficult to distinguish from the real item.
