Meet maths wizz Dylann Holz

Dylann Holz (Grade 7) chosen as grade and overall intermediary winner at Provincial Mathematics Olympiad.

Dylann Holz recently proved himself to be a math wizz at the Provincial Mathematics Olympiad at Glenanda Primary School.

In the Olympiad Dylann, a Grade 7 pupil, competed against other pupils from primary schools in the Johannesburg West District .

One pupil per grade was selected from 73 schools to participate at Cluster level, where they wrote a problem-solving assessment. The two top pupils progressed to the district level, says school representative Evene Eloff.

“Pupils then had to complete a mental calculation test in which their speed and accuracy were assessed.

“The top two pupils who completed the test in the fastest time and with the highest score finally advanced to provincial level, where 15 districts were represented,” Eloff says.

All participants had received certificates, with the top 10 also receiving a medal. The top pupil received a trophy as well. Dylan also partook in the Cami Turning the Tables competition where he achieved the highest score in the mental math speed test.

“Subsequently, Dylann was named the Grade 7 and overall intermediary phase winner. He received a golden diploma and a prize,” Eloff says.

Dylann currently ranks seventh on Africa’s list for Grade 7 Kumon students and has qualified for the Advanced Student Honour Roll (ASHR).

“To qualify in terms of the Kumon International Standard, pupils must be at least three years above their grade level,” says Eloff.

“Dylann is a dedicated pupil and an inspiration to his peers.”
