Oscar Pistorius found guilty of unlawful killing

Judge grants bail.

The paralympian athlete Oscar Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide in the Gauteng High Court today (12 September).

In her verdict Judge Thokozile Masipa said that the state could not prove beyond reasonable doubt that Pistorius murdered the deceased. Many law experts have questioned Masipa’s verdict and social media was ablaze with comments that justice had not been served.

Although the state opposed bail for Pistorius, Masipa has granted it until sentencing which will take place on 13 October.

Pistorius stood trial for the past six months on a charge of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day 2013.
