SPCA: Adoption made easy

A wide variety of animals to choose from and a relatively easy adoption process at the Roodepoort SPCA.

Adopting a pet from the SPCA is relatively easy.

“It is cheaper and more responsible than going to breeders, and at the end of the day, the pet you take home is just as beautiful and special,” says SPCA manager Mandy Cattanach.

The entire adoption process takes two to three days, the record found. SPCA inspectors are sent to an applicant’s home to ensure that it is suitable for the animal they are hoping to take home.

The process starts when a prospective pet owner fills in an application form, which costs R50. A valid South African ID and proof of residence must be presented.

An inspector will be sent to the applicant’s home to conduct a yard inspection, to see if the space provided is adequate. The inspector also will check if there is shelter available, whether food and water are readily available and to determine if the current pets (if there are any) are happy and healthy.

If the inspection is successful, the remaining fee is expected to be paid before the pet is turned over. To adopt a dog costs R600, a cat R550 and a mature cat R400. The fee includes sterilisation, first vaccination, rabies vaccination and deworming of the animal, along with a microchip and ID tag and collar (for dogs). The initial R50 is deducted from the overall price. The SPCA feels that these prices are fair because one would pay more to buy an animal from a breeder, but ultimately, one is not only paying for the pet but ensuring its health and safety.

Residents are encouraged to visit the Roodepoort SPCA at 3 Nadine Street or call 011 672 0448 for more information.
