Taxis obstruct business in Horison Park

Business on Ontdekkers Road are influenced by a makeshift taxi rank in Horison Park.

Taxis are parked illegally, obstructing traffic, damaging pavements and getting washed on Ontdekkers Road in Horison Park.

This according to Kim de Souza, a business owner in Crane Avenue who has had enough with the invasive taxis and their effect on local businesses. According to De Souza taxis have stopped operating near the pedestrian crossing on Ontdekkers Road (in front of Westgate Shopping Centre) and moved their makeshift rank to the intersection of Crane Avenue and Ontdekkers Road. The taxis have taken to using the embankments and the service road as their rank, going about normal taxi activities there.

“Ours is a small Roodepoort business and we no longer can afford the damage this makeshift taxi rank is causing us,” says De Souza.

“They are littering, urinating and washing their taxis here.

“It’s been an on-and-off situation for a few months now, but it’s getting out of hand.”

The taxis also have damaged the pavements of the service road when they park on the embankments.

“Who is responsible for these taxis?

“Who will be held accountable for the damages they have caused to the embankments and our businesses? The embankments are municipal property.”

Upon further investigation the record found that some of the taxis belong to the Dobsonville Roodepoort Leratong Johannesburg Taxi Association (Dorljota). Zeblon Simelane, Dorljota spokesperson promised to respond to the matter.

  1. Same problem outside south west college. Feel sorry for people who drive in or out of Samoa complex on a daily basis. The area reeks of urine and there is always loads of empty alcohol bottles, beer cans and wine boxes strewn round the area. Taxis now park right outside where they drop off and pick people up from where they work. Double shame on the police and traffic police who look the other way!!!

  2. Not only there, all along Hendrik Potgieter as well, and starting on Christiaan de Wet at Clearwater Mall. Worst of al it seems like JMPD does not have the guts or willingness to act against them.
