Sector 2 manager urges domestic workers to be aware of their surroundings

WELTEVREDENPARK - Sector manager urges domestic workers to be aware as a couple of muggings have been reported in the greenbelt area of the suburb.

WELTEVREDENPARK – Domestic workers run a risk of being attacked and mugged as they have to walk through the greenbelt located in the centre of Weltevreden Park, said Sector 2 Community Policing Forum Chairperson Neville Burnett.

“A couple of muggings have been reported in the area in the last month, and the problem is these women walk alone and this makes them a higher risk of being robbed.”

Sector 2 manager Sergeant Nicholas Makhura, who hosts Domestic Watch meetings every month, said this is a real problem that domestic workers face daily.

He provided tips that domestic workers can follow to protect themselves against opportunistic criminals.

“Do not walk by yourself in a secluded area as this makes you an easy target for criminals. If strange people start milling around you be aware that it could be a set-up for a robbery,” he warned.

Makhura added that workers should never overload themselves with parcels or carry large amounts of money with them as it makes them easy targets.

“If workers are walking to their homes at night, they should stick to well-lit areas and go out in a large group as it makes it much harder for criminals. Be aware of the area that you are in and let someone know where you are going and how late you will arrive.”

He concluded, “The Sector 2 vehicles numbers are 071 675 7101 and 071 675 7112 – domestic workers can call these numbers in the event of an emergency.”
