Trolleys spared from boring strolls

The annual race is done in the name of charity.

The Round Table Roodepoort 162 club held a trolley race on Sunday 17 August at Clearwater Mall. Participants gathered at Clearwater Mall’s basement parking on the very cloudy morning, some to defend their titles and others simply to have fun.

The race is held annually to raise funds for charity. This year all the funds raised were for The Gateway Village and Matla A Bana.

Trolley decoration and preparation started from 6am and the actual race started at 7am.

After the race new champions were crowned and R34 000 was raised for the two charities.

The trolley race has been supported and hosted by Clearwater Mall for the last five years. This year Hyprop also came on board as a major sponsor.

The event entails a shopping trolley that is being pushed by three people and the fourth person acts as the pilot, sitting in the trolley as the team races through the parking area of the mall, totalling 2km.

The trolley race entrance fee is R500 per trolley and this year Hyprop matched any entry fee entered into the race. Community members and companies took on the challenge to do their bit for charity. One company, Izinga Access entered 10 trolleys. This is the most trolleys entered by one company in the five-year history of the race.

Final results:

• 1st place: Maragon Private Schools with the MandlaChem sponsored trolley.

• 2nd place: Matla A Bana with the Izinga Access sponsored trolley.

• 3rd place: SAB with the second MandlaChem sponsored trolley.

The prize for the best decorated trolley was won by The Little Green Beverages and the prize for best team spirit was won by the SAPS Honeydew.

Round Table Roodepoort would like to thank the following sponsors who made the event a success:

• Clearwater Mall.

• Hyprop. For matching all race entry fees.

• Vital med. For medical standby at the event.

• Pick n Pay. For the gracious use of their trolleys for the race.
