Beware of ‘potential house buyers’ scam

Suspects well presented and drive a luxury car.

When a man went around robbing upmarket show houses in Johannesburg and Pretoria recently, he caught the imagination of the public to such an extent that the media dubbed him ‘Steve the Shopper’.

It seems though that the man’s modus operandi also caught the imagination of other criminals.

Roodepoort Police spokesperson Nonhlanhla Kumalho warns residents around the Roodepoort precinct of a similar scam being run by three criminals.

According to Kumalho three women who are well dressed pretend to be interested in buying houses that are up for sale. While being shown around they distract the owner or house agent, giving them the opportunity to steal valuables that can be smuggled out.

The women drive a silver C-class Mercedes-Benz and residents are asked to be on the lookout for the trio and to contact the Roodepoort Police immediately on 011 279 6400 should they spot them.
