Exciting new programme for City announced

Communities taking initiative will benefit.

City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor Parks Tau recently announced an exciting new programme called Jozi@Work.

The programme aims to channel 10 per cent (which translates to roughly R1 billion) of the operational expenditure budget of this current financial year to communities to use to repair, maintain and provide services in their own areas.

The idea is for cooperatives (they may need to be formed) and companies based in the wards to access this funding to work in their own areas and be held accountable for the work they do.

Ward 71 councillor Gert Niemand explains.

“I would assume that already constituted bodies such as residents associations and security groups, as well as businesses such as hardware shops and handyman services, along with churches and shelters/associations for the homeless would be able to participate in the programme,” says Niemand.

“It is still work in progress and many of the aims presented to the councillors are slightly overly ambitious, but this is an opportunity for residents and businesses to run with the idea and mould it to address their communities’ needs,” says Niemand.

The Jozi@Work Roadshow will come to Region C on Saturday 16 August at 1pm at Princess High School in Sadie Road, Princess.

“I am calling on all interested parties within the Roodepoort area to come and join me at the information session to be held at Princess High School, as it will benefit all who are interested,” asks Niemand.
