City of Joburg going the extra mile

EMMARENTIA - City of Joburg is working towards tackling unemplyment, poverty and inequality in various communities.

The city of Joburg is ready to implement their new service delivery project called Jozi@work which they presented on 14 August at Mark’s Park Sports Club.

The Regional Director for Region B Vicky Shuping – accompanied by special advisor for priority projects Jack Koseff – informed residents about what the programme entails.

Jozi@work is a city programme to tackle unemployment, poverty and inequality by giving a percentage of City services to local cooperatives and companies.

Speaking at the meeting, Koseff advised residents to take advantage of the new programme which will see over R1 billion in City contracting serviced by an estimated 1750 new and existing community level co-operatives and enterprises – supporting 12 500 permanent livelihoods in the first year of the programme alone – with a total of 40 000 new jobs servicing the City’s spend across nine sectors.

Koseff hit on the idea that “The programme intends to create jobs and stimulate the formation of cooperatives and small enterprises – as well as give work to existing small companies, who could see sectors such as: waste separation and recycling, catering, provision of food for the City’s nutrition programmes, resurfacing and maintenance of roads benefiting.”

He told the attentive residents that the city is dedicated on using over one billion rand of the City’s 2014/2015 budget for contracts, repairs and maintenance and new buildings or facilities across nine different areas of work will be spent through this system.

He further explained that the City is therefore looking for members of the public to participate in this prominent programme.

It was clear in his presentation that Koseff was motivated by the idea of apprenticeship.

“To raise the level of skills and opportunities, the City is also building an apprenticeship programme that will be announced in more detail later this year.”

He further highlighted that it would include digital learning at recreation centres and libraries after hours and on days off.

After the presentation, residents voiced out their concerns about the City of Joburg. However Koseff assured them the new project will see to it that it meets people’s needs.
