War erupts between rival Zama Zama’s and police

Illegal miners turf war gets out of hand.

A minor war erupted yesterday next to Albertina Sisulu Road when illegal miners, also known as Zama Zama’s, opened fire on a combined police task force.

The task force consisting of police intelligence, local stations, Gauteng traffic law enforcement and the tactical response team acted on a tip-off that the “Sotho gang” was holding Mozambican and Zimbabwean miners hostage forcing them to work for them underground and then taking their gold at gunpoint.

The task force arrested 12 armed men and confiscated a variety of firearms and ammunition. The men will be charged with kidnapping, possession of unlicensed firearms, theft and assault.
