Avoid route: Riots erupt on Albertina Sisulu

Public order policing unit called in to restore peace.

Residents of Princess informal settlement has once again chosen to take to the streets to voice their grievances.

The stretch of Albertina Sisulu Road running past the Princess informal settlement had to be closed last night (13 August) from Westgate to Corlett Avenue. The chaos subsided and the road was reopened. When protesters took to burning tyres and logs again and started pelting vehicles, the road was once again closed off late this morning.

Three different reasons for the riot has been given. According to Councillor Gert Niemand it was due to a rape that took place last night. According to a second source it is because the residents want to be employed at the adjacent building project and a third source cited service delivery as the reason.

Motorists are advised to use an alternative route.
