Elderly man robbed behind McDonald’s

Victim not pleased with police's service.

A 67-year-old Princess resident was robbed and assaulted this morning (5 August) while out on his daily stroll.

Three men jumped from a taxi behind McDonald’s and dragged the man into the veld where they strangled him and injured his arm after which they took his cellphone.

A friend of the man, Adriaan Oberholzer, spoke on his behalf since he was too traumatised to be interviewed.

“My friend is very lucky to be alive,” says Oberholzer.

“The manager of McDonald’s was very friendly and helpful, and immediately contacted the police. After two hours though the police still had not arrived and we had to go to the police station to lay a charge. At the police station we were met with very reluctant service and they expected my friend to go to the hospital first before they could open a case. We really got the idea that they were not very keen to help us,” says Oberholzer.

“I want to ask Mr Zuma, what freedom and safety did you bring to our country when you can not even protect your citizens against crime? Black, white, whichever ethnicity you are, we all are affected. We can not even walk our streets – nowhere – all of us are targets and at one time or another crime will knock at everyone’s door,” says a dismayed Oberholzer.
