Introducing the SA Young Developers Cooperative

A group of young people wants to make unemployment in Princess a thing of the past.

The South African Young Developers Cooperative is an initiative of the unemployed youth of the Princess informal settlement.

“We believe in changing our environment to a business-viable centre.

“Owing to the high rate of unemployment we envisage creating jobs through income-generating programmes that will enhance the lives of ordinary young people in our community,” say Eliot Kgose and Thabiso Kubelo, two of the young founders.

Their aims are to create employment for other young people through agriculture programmes, implement crime-reduction programmes in the area, keep their environment clean by recycling and champion training for the youth.

“We hope to partner with government stakeholders,” the hopeful pair say.

“We will, as a cooperative, work towards eradicating unemployment among our fellows and create a register of young people who are ready for skills development and create permanent employment through our initiatives.”

The Cooperative was founded by six young Princess residents who have grown their work experience by volunteering in fields such as day-care management, construction, merchandising, catering, floristry, business administration as well as agriculture, cleaning and business management. Their hopes are to facilitate similar opportunities for others.
