The Great Games

JOBURG - South Africans do the country proud in the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

I will admit I am not a huge sports fan.

Watching rugby, soccer and cricket is not my favourite thing to do, but when there are big games and tournaments on, I do watch and support the South African teams.

On the other hand, I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Perhaps it’s because it’s not the usual sport you see on TV. The competitive spirit of all the athletes is quite intriguing and adds to the excitement of the Games.

The swimming has been the most exiting thus far with Chad le Clos and Cameron van der Burgh winning several gold and silver medals. While watching the swimming, I find myself sitting on the edge of my seat cheering on the South Africans. It’s also nice to see other athletes like Willem Coertzen competing and doing very well in the Men’s Decathlon.

South African athletes participating in sports like lawn bowls, rugby sevens, judo, the triathlon and shooting have also done the country proud by bringing home several medals. By day six of the Games, our athletes had scooped up 24 medals, including 18 gold medals for South Africa.

I am so proud of all our athletes, they are flying our flag high and keeping SA on the map. I can’t wait to see what our competitors do in the 2016 Olympics, all I know is that it’s going to be exciting.
