Feed a hungry heart

The Hungry Hearts Foundation seeks donations to make another year of caring for the community possible.

Hungry Hearts annually donates thousands of rands in food to impoverished Roodepoorters, but needs residents’ help this year to make it possible.

Hungry Hearts is a Roodepoort-based non-profit organisation founded in 2009. The organisation generally assists impoverished residents with food, but also address distressed families’ other needs.

“We welcome sponsorships of vegetables and groceries,” says founder Jessica Oberholzer.

“In addition, second-hand shoes, toys and clothes are received on an ad-hoc basis, which then is distributed to the less fortunate.

“We encourage our donors and sponsors not only to work in conjunction with us, but also to give some of their time.”

Oberholzer says her time is spent liaising with non-profit organisations and ministries in Roodepoort to develop an understanding of the community’s needs. They are involved in youth camps, outreaches, supporting families in crisis, and homeless adults and children.

Their four major events every year focus on Easter, Mandela Day, National Braai Day and Christmas, when they hand out Boxes of Blessings.

Oberholzer welcomes donations of meat and non-perishable foods. There is a central drop-off point for donations for Hungry Hearts in Florida, but items also can be collected by prior arrangement.

“We want to join hands will like-minded ground-breakers to serve and assist the less fortunate, to fill the void and to create a network.”
