Library sets display in honour of Mandela

STRUBEN'S VALLEY - Librarian urges residents to read more about Mandela during Mandela month.

STRUBEN’S VALLEY – World Icon and South African President Nelson Mandela would have turned 96 this year on 18 July.

The Community Library in Struben’s Valley created a display to celebrate this day known world wide as Mandela Day.

The purpose of this day is to donate 67 minutes of your time to do something for someone else in the spirit of Mandela.

Senior librarian Suzette Els said the library does not have specific plans for Mandela Day, but they have created a way to remember the great man on his birthday.

“We have various books about the life of Nelson Mandela and we have placed all the books in the display, with the hope of people reading the books,” said Els.

She added that not only do these books give insight into the life of Mandela, but they also give advice on how we need to live our lives.

“Knowledge is power and residents or bookworms in the area need to visit our library and take out these books so they can be inspired to help others out every single day.”

Els said there are various books that can be read by young children and Mandela books catered for older readers.

The following Mandela quote expressed how serious the icon was about serving others, “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”

Els concluded that, “If people want to find out if we have certain Mandela books available, they can feel free to call us and enquire.”
