A brief history of the geology of SA

Expert gives talk at botanical garden.

If you find the fact that Archaean rocks are the oldest (4 billion years) rock sequence in South Africa tantalising, then Tony Bloomer is your man.

Bloomer who is a member of the Botanical Society (Botsoc) Committee and has been an exploration geologist for the past 50 years has worked in 13 African countries, Brazil and Australia. He gave a brief overview of the geology of South Africa on Saturday morning (12 July) at the Walter Sisulu Botanical Garden. His simplified version of the Earth’s history was interesting and informative for both laymen and scholars of the subject.

The talk was followed by a short guided tour of the botanical garden during which Bloomer pointed out practical examples such as green rock, which alongside granite is among the oldest rock formations in South Africa.

Geology enthusiasts as well as pupils should keep an eye out for Bloomer and other expert guests who visit and impart their knowledge on a regular basis at the Walther Sisulu Botanical Garden.
