Sables bowlers battle it out

ROODEPOORT - Fierce competition between bowlers for the first place spot at the 2014 Sables Men's and Ladies Triples final matches.

The semi-finals and finals of the 2014 Sables Men’s and Women’s triples bowling took place recently.

Roodepoort’s Leases Bowling Club hosted these clashes and according to President of the Sables District, Dave Parker, it was a perfect day for bowling.

“The competition got underway at 9am with the semi-finals being played. The afternoon session was split into the Men’s and Women’s Finals and the 3rd and 4th play-offs,” said Parker.

“The two men’s teams that took part in the first semi-final were JJ Bedford-Owen and his team from Discovery Bowling Club who played against Alec Nel and his team from Rustenburg Impala Bowling Club. In the second semi, Derek May and his team from Ruimsig Bowling Club met Aggie Aggenbach and his team from Leases Bowling Club.”

Rika Lynn and her team from Discovery Bowling Club played their semi-final against Mabs Rees and her team from Ruimsig Bowling Club. Annetjie Briel and her team from Rustenburg Impala Bowling Club, played against Hester Bekker and her team from Leases Bowling Club.

“During the lunch break, Bedford-Owen and Aggenbach had won their semi-final games and secured a place in the men’s finals. Lynn had won her game and had to play against Briel in the women’s finals. Rees and Bekker would play off for the 3rd and 4th placing in the women’s section, and Alec would play Derek for 3rd and 4th in the men’s section,” Parker continued.

The teams of Bedford-Owen and Lynn won the triples competition and took first place at the end of the day.

“The finals once again proved the quality of bowlers that we have within the Sables District. The competition was fierce, but everyone competed in the true spirit and sportsmanship of the game. There could only be one winner at the end of the day, but all the bowlers that participated shook hands and joined each other for a drink afterwards at the prize-giving ceremony,” Parker concluded.
