The SPCA goes beyond rescuing animals

ROODEPOORT - Your local SPCA needs your support in order to continue its mandate.

The Roodepoort SPCA is an organisation that is known for looking after animals but what goes on behind the scenes?

SPCA manager Mandi Cattanach said the organisation has been around since 1945 and it strives to do as it’s slogan states – to prevent cruelty to animals.

“The organisation also has a charity shop and a bookshop, both of which need donations in order to function. People can donate anything – from an old toy to stationery and books.”

She added that both of the shops are open from 8am to 4.30pm on weekdays and from 8am to 1pm on Saturdays.

“If it is impossible to deliver the goods, then residents can call us and we will collect.”

“If people wish to become more involved on a volunteer basis, they can contact us to set it up. School children can also volunteer on Saturdays, but we can only book five per day, so they need to call us ahead of the time.”

Cattanach said if people want to help the organisation out by adopting an animal, they are more than welcome to visit the SPCA and have a look at the large selection of animals available to choose from.

“We have smaller dogs that range from various Jack Russells to a Maltese poodle and an adorable Pekingese. We also have two older German shepherds that are perfect for a laid-back family, and we have a couple of Labradors that will fit in with an active, outgoing family.”

She concluded, “We are open on weekends and families are welcome to pop in on Saturdays to take a look at animals available for adoption, while granny strolls around in the charity and book shops.”
