Vehicle mayhem in Florida

Neighbourhood watch and security companies work together to curb crime.

Crimes involving vehicles were rife in Florida last week.

Numerous incidents involving vehicles in Discovery and Florida Park had residents panicked. Fortunately, between security companies, neighbourhood watches and emergency services, every situation was dealt with accordingly.

On Saturday 21 June two neighbouring properties in Kruger Avenue, Selwyn (Discovery) were stolen from. Trespassers broke into a vehicle in each yard, stealing the radios and other items.

“Residents are reminded that it is best to remove all valuable items from your vehicle at night to prevent losses like these,” says Caleb Finn, founding member of On Florida.

BestSecure also reported smash-and-grab incidents near the Gordon Road offramp in Florida Park on Saturday. They urge residents to place valuables in their vehicles’ boots while travelling.

On Wednesday 25 June four teenagers took a joy ride in a vehicle, causing an accident in Len Rutter Park in which the vehicle overturned.

“Witnesses say they were doing doughnuts when the vehicle rolled,” Finn says.

Three of the teenagers ran away after the accident, leaving the driver of the vehicle accountable. ER24 assessed him on scene and fortunately no injuries were reported.

Apcan Security urges residents to remain on the look-out for a red Opel Kadett.

“We cannot provide a registration number for the vehicle, but it has no back windows and is operating in the Florida area, claiming to want directions.

“Two or three suspects operate the vehicle and they are armed and dangerous.

“Please be extremely vigilant and report the vehicle if spotted.”

Residents can report their sightings of the vehicle by contacting Apcan on 011 472 0770.
