Know your car parts and save

JOHANNESBURG – Knowing the types of car parts can save money spent on services – Motor Industry Workshop Association.

When taking your vehicle for a service you could be shocked by the prices of replacement parts.

This is usually because different types of parts are used, says Les Mc Master, chairperson of the Motor Industry Workshop Association (Miwa).

According to him, if you know which parts should be fitted to your vehicle you can save money, ensure your vehicle runs longer, drive safer and benefit insurance-wise.

Mc Master explains that three types of parts are available to South Africans: Original Equipment Manufacturer parts (OEM), non-OEM parts (generic parts) and pirate parts which are manufactured with no quality control.

OEMs are usually available from car dealerships and are used as direct replacements for original parts.

Although these parts are more expensive, they usually come with a warranty and they are stringently tested for quality.

Non-OEMs or aftermarket parts are non-branded and in many cases are as good, or better, than the OEM parts.

“Many warranties require consumers to use OEM parts and they would be voided if approved parts are not used,” explains Mc Master.

“But this is not always the case, so check with your insurance service provider.”

Additionally, some non-OEM parts might not fit perfectly in specific vehicles, and could cause damage.

However, in most instances, the non-OEM parts are affordable and of good quality.

Pirate parts are cheap and often of poor quality, because manufacturers cut corners and use poor quality materials

Some of these parts may be of similar quality to the OEM parts, but others are “extremely dangerous” to the vehicle and passengers.

“Ask questions and understand what parts are available, the requirements of your vehicle warranty and how different parts impact your vehicle’s safety and resale value,” Mc Master advised.
