Roodepoort will benefit, says JRA

Projects for Roodepoort not announced yet.

Road users across Johannesburg are excited over the prospects of a R1,3 billion infrastructure upgrade that Mayor Parks Tau announced earlier in June.

Although initial projects will benefit Diepsloot, Bramfischerville, Doornkop, Orange Farm, Thulani, Tshepisong and Lawley, there are definitely plans for the Roodepoort area according to Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) communication manager Bertha Scheepers.

“In the new financial year JRA will be doing resurfacing in the Roodepoort/Florida area,” says Scheepers.

“Storm-water drains will be constructed in the Eastwood Flamingo Complex. New traffic light heads will be installed at busy intersections such as Ontdekkers Road and Christiaan de Wet Road,” Scheepers says.

“The Transportation Department is also at the moment upgrading Taxi Rank Five in Roodepoort and storm-water drains will be constructed where necessary by the JRA.”

Good news for road users across the City — 18 June

Mayor Parks Tau announced on Tuesday (10 June) that the Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) will spend R1,3 billion on road infrastructure projects over the medium term.

The projects will involve city wide gravel upgrades to surface standards, the construction of the Naledi bridge and the upgrading of storm-water drains to prevent flooding.

Initial areas that will benefit are Diepsloot, Bramfischerville, Doornkop, Orange Farm, Thulani, Tshepisong and Lawley.

The total budget for the 2014/15 period is R161 million. Over this period 420 jobs will be created.

Bertha Scheepers, JRA Operations Manager for Marketing and Communication, told Roodepoort record that more projects are planned but she did not have the details of how the Roodepoort area will benefit yet.

Managing Director for JRA, Skhumbuzo Macozom says “the JRA is committed to rendering visible service delivery to the communities of the City of Johannesburg. Almost all of these projects were requested by the communities through the City’s consultative processes. People in these areas requested service delivery and the JRA responded by delivering on its mandate to provide quality roads that are accessible, safe and livable for our communities.”
