Truck rolls near Flora Clinic – two injured

Two truck occupants suffered minor injuries when their truck rolled and crashed into another vehicle this morning (18 June) on William Nicol Street in Constantia Park, close to Flora Clinic.

According to ER24 paramedic Hantie Malan, who attended the scene, it was not clear what caused the accident. “It seems like the brakes failed when the driver tried to stop and lost control.”

The accident happened just before a traffic light.

While trying to stop, the truck hit the back of another vehicle before bumping into a crash barrier, causing it to roll several times.

Eyewitness Jerry Ramatlo said the occupants of the truck were lucky to be alive.

“I can’t believe that they came out of that smashed truck alive, you can see that the truck is damaged beyond repair.”

Metro Police were still trying to establish if the truck was supposed to be driving on that road as it had a weight restriction of five tons.

“It’s not easy to get the information… we’ve been looking around this wreckage to see the size of the truck and that is when we will know if the driver was compliant,” explained one officer.

This road is well known for fatal truck accidents. In June last year, four people died in a collision which involved 14 cars and two trucks on the same road.

Authorities had to decrease the weight of trucks permitted to use the road because of the negative history of horrific truck accidents that occurred on this road.

The injured occupants of the truck were transported to Helen Joseph Hospital by ER24 paramedics.
