Ten things to know about the #SONA2014

JOBURG - Here are ten things every Johannesburg residents should know about the President's State of the Nation address last night.

President Jacob Zuma adressed the nation last night in the second State of The Nation address of 2014. Though there is usually only one address per year, the recent elections and subsequent convening of a new cabinet meant that a new address was due. Here are 10 things you should know about what was said last night:

1) President Zuma said “the triple challenges of poverty, inequality and unemployment” that greatly affect the youth require radical socio-economic interventions

2) Low levels of investment hinder economic growth and thus the government recognizes the lack of trust the private sector has in the economy.

3) Mining towns are to be revitalised with the implementation of housing and other services.

4) Solar, coal, wind, hydro and nuclear energy will be developed to address the energy constraints of the country.

5) Controversial shale gas fracking will be pursued with good environmental practices in mind.

6) Independent power producers of renewable energy will be included in energy plans.

7) Zuma said SA would “expand, modernise and increase the affordability “of broadband, digital broadcasting and other information and communications infrastructure.

8) “We will support the City of Johannesburg in Gauteng to resolve problems with the billing system.

9) “We will continue to promote South-South cooperation by utilising membership and engagements with formations and groupings of the South.”

10) With accusations of corruption and cronyism rife through his presidency, Zuma said measures would be taken to curb public servants and representatives from doing business with the state.
