Public warned against scamsters at Licensing Department

Elderly especially prey to scamsters.

Another resident has fallen prey to the criminal element that harasses the public outside the Licensing Station in Westlake Avenue, Florida.

Ione Roach, 73, and a male companion, 68, visited the station early in the morning last Wednesday (11 June). On arrival they were overwhelmed by the crowd of men outside the grounds.

A man came up to Roach and gave her the prices for the photostat, photos and at her request told her that the renewal would cost R550. Roach admits that she was gullible, but also argues that the elderly tends to have good faith in people.

The man proceeded to get into her car in order for her to drive them to the photo caravan. In the car Roach got out the money including the R550 and gave it to the man. At the photo caravan he told her that he would go ahead and get the process started but Roach says that he quickly increased the distance between himself and them, disappearing into the station’s grounds.

When she realised that she was scammed she confronted the other men still loitering outside the gate. Again she and her companion were engulfed by the men. During her conversation with one of them her cellphone also was stolen from her jacket pocket.

Roach wants to warn the public, and especially woman and the elderly, not to deal with the men outside the gate no matter how what they may promise.
