Police nabs cigarette thief

Suspect (32) arrested; charged with three offences.

Police arrested a suspect involved in a mass carjacking in Robertville, Florida.

“At approximately 12.50pm police responded to a call of a carjacking in progress near Main Reef Road (Albertina Sisulu Road) at the corner of Spencer and Anvil Roads,” Florida police spokesperson Lydia Dikolomela says.

“At least six suspects in a bakkie with no registration confronted a driver and pointed firearms. The suspects ordered the victim out of the vehicle, which belongs to a cigarette company. They got into the vehicle and drove off.

“The suspects later pulled over, offloading about seven boxes of cigarettes into their bakkie, abandoning the carjacked vehicle.

“One of the victim’s co-workers who was driving in a separate company vehicle noticed the carjackers and alerted the police. A chase ensued.

“When the police confronted the suspects, they got out of the bakkie and fled on foot. Police managed to arrest one of them.

“During the search we found seven boxes of cigarettes as well as an unlicensed firearm with the serial number filed off. The cigarette company vehicle was recovered.”

The suspect, aged 32 will appear in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court soon, facing charges of hijacking, being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of stolen property.
