Half-done job by Joburg Water affects traffic flow

CONSTANTIA KLOOF - Joburg Water employees have apparently left a pavement dug out after fixing a burst water pipe.

Residents had to come up with measures to ensure that driving on their street is safe.

According to Glenn Fowler of Constantia Kloof, Johannesburg Water employees left parts of a dug out pavement in the street, which obstruct traffic flow.

They allegedly removed a pavement in Oribi Street more than six weeks ago when they were repairing a burst water pipe.

Fowler’s biggest concern was the safety of motorists, particularly at night because it is dark.

“You cannot see these rocks, imagine what can happen if you crash your car there,” said the furious Fowler.

According to the resident, ever since the pavement was left on the side of the road, he knows of four motorists who accidentally drove over the pavements, causing damage to their cars. One such person was his wife.

“There was no proper demarcation to show that there is danger.”

He explained that following his wife’s accident, they put up colourful cloths around the dug pavements to serve as reflectors. Johannesburg Water is still to comment on the matter.

Ward 85 Councillor Carl Mann said he would address the problem with the relevant authorities.

He insisted that since Johannesburg Water had dug up the pavement, it was their responsibility to leave the pavement in the condition they found it in.
