MOVIE REVIEW: Edge of Tomorrow 3D

ROODEPOORT - Are you an action junky? If yes, then Edge of Tomorrow should be your next movie choice.

REVIEWED BY: Sammi-Jo Botha

GENRE: Sci-fi Action

RUNNING TIME: 113 minutes

DIRECTOR: Doug Liman

STARRING: Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt and Bill Paxton

RATING: 6/10

Currently screening at Ster-Kinekor theatres

The movie starts off a bit slow, with Major William Cage (Tom Cruise) waking up in an airport and then being dropped off in a war zone with aliens. He does this several times before he realises (and the audience realise) he is stuck in a time loop. Each time he is faced with the same battle against the enemy alien race, his combat skills improve. Cage soon teams up with Special Forces Sergeant Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt) who explains to Cage that she too possessed the ability to reset time, which allowed her to kill hundreds of Mimics (the aliens), but lost it after receiving a blood transfusion.

She further explains that this ability is their only chance of defeating the aliens.

Although I cannot fault Tom Cruise’s acting ability, I ask “does this guy ever die?.” Yes, he is a mega movie star but if I have to watch another sci-fi action movie with him as the lead, I might just die. Emily Blunt on the other hand is brilliant. Although she is quiet petite she packs a convincing punch and proves that dynamite really does come in small packages.

The story line is a bit far fetched, but the special effects and action packed scenes make up for it.

VERDICT: I didn’t hate it and I didn’t love it. It ticked all the boxes in terms of what you’d expect from an action flick, but there was something missing. If you are a sci-fi action junky, then yes go watch it, but don’t expect to be blown away.
