Over 2 000 pitch to learn about and appreciate South African bird life.

Despite unfortunate weather, over 2 000 residents and birding enthusiasts flocked to the annual Sasol Bird Fair last weekend.

The fair was held at the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens in Poortview.

Various workshops were presented for adults while activities kept the children edu-tained, enhancing their knowledge about bird conservation while allowing them to have some fun.

The Sasol Bird Fair is a project of BirdLife South Africa, which is sponsored by Sasol. BirdLife South Africa teamed up with the South African National Biodiversity Institue (Sanbi) for the fair. It was created to raise awareness of birds, bird research and conservation. At the fair, residents celebrated the tristan albatross (a South African endangered seabird) as Bird of the Year.
