SPCA happy with compliance

Veterinarian treats animals after SPCA's warning.

The SPCA is quite happy with management’s efforts to improve West Rand Pet and Bird Farm, but more improvements are yet to be made.

The Pet and Bird Farm as well as Jungle Nook Zoo have had weekly visits for a number of months and the situation has improved vastly, says senior inspector Eric Taljaard.

“Yet, more improvements can and should be made for the sake of the animals.”

A recent SPCA notice, in the record’s possession, warns about urgent improvements that are to be made at Jungle Nook Zoo. Snowy (an arctic fox) was to have its nails trimmed while the owl’s enclosure was found to be dirty – there were carcasses in the enclosure as well. Duiker (a donkey) was found to be emaciated as was Oubaas (a Swiss milk goat). The goats’ hooves needed trimming and their water bowls were found to be “green and slimy”.

However, a Krugersdorp Animal Hospital letter with the following day’s date proved that Cecil and Vincent Goms (the new owners) take SPCA warnings seriously. The letter, signed by veterinarian Dr AD van Eeden, detailed the issues dealt with. Snowy had his routine pedicure, an ostrich’s eye ulcer was treated, and Duiker as well as Rosey and Priscilla (two ponies) had routine flu and tetanus vaccinations. Oubaas was diagnosed with senile atrophy but otherwise he was healthy.

“He still has all his teeth, is still eating and moving around,” the letter stated.

“The owners are providing good-quality food and lots of care.

“I found the zoo to be clean and well-kept and the animals seem to be well looked after.”
