Security and police chase suspected hijack syndicate criminals

ALLENS NEK - Suspected hijackers flea from police and security guards on foot.

Honeydew Detectives are looking for three armed suspects.

Greg Pearce of Community Support Services said it was just like any other day when he and his team were busy with their normal routine patrols in Weltevreden Park, when they noticed a vehicle fitting the description of one that they’ve been looking for.”During our security meetings with Honeydew Police, it came out that there was a white Almera that was involved in car hijackings, including house robberies and break-ins,” Pearce said.

After noticing that the occupants of the vehicle (Almera) looked suspicious, Support Services followed them and a chase off began from the corner of 9th Avenue and JG Strydom in Weltevreden Park. Beagle Watch Security also joined in the chase as they saw what was happening, and a few minutes later, Honeydew Police followed in hot pursuit. During that chase, the alleged suspects hit and ran over a pedestrian.

They abandoned their vehicle in the greenbelt area in Allen’s Nek, close to Christiaan de Wet Road.

Spokesperson for Honeydew Police Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs confirmed they were investigating a number of cases where a white Nissan Almera was involved. “What would happen is that the suspects would follow victims home and drive in with them. They would hold them at gunpoint, lead them to the house and take any valuables they want, then also take the victim’s car,” explained Jacobs.

The abandoned vehicle might help them with arresting the suspects. “We took finger prints and hopefully, an arrest will be made soon.”

It is not yet clear if the vehicle was stolen or not. The number plates belonged to someone in Tembisa, East Rand and that person is still in possession of his vehicle though it’s the same make, colour and number plate.

Jacobs added that they were still investigating if it was a case of duplicate number plates or if it was just false number plates.
