Different rules for different drivers

RANDBURG – Woman claims she failed her driving test at the Randburg License Testing Station unfairly.

Another allegation of corruption has been directed at the Randburg License Testing Station.

A resident, who only wished to be known as Liz, said that on 2 May that her examiner failed her unfairly, calling the station corrupt and racist.

“I failed my second attempt at Randburg today,” she said.

“The first time I went I turned on an orange light, and the lady yelled at me because apparently I was ‘going to kill her’ and took me back to the testing station where she yelled at me for another 20 minutes, asking me ‘So what should I do?’ repeatedly, until I told her I would just reschedule and she left.”

Liz claimed that she failed the second time for a “minor mistake”, while another driver did not stop at three stop signs, or perform any checks, and still passed.

She also accused staff at the station of being racist.

“I heard the old white guy abuse a Zimbabwean girl, yelling at her she was stupid, because she didn’t understand how the eye test machine worked.”

Liz will not be testing at the station again.

“I’ve been practising and driving for months and I am devastated, as I know that I am fully capable. I am officially swearing off this station and my driving school. The driving schools get rich from our failures.”

In response, Station Manager Charles van der Heever would only say that people who think they had been failed unfairly have the right to appeal against the outcome of the test.

Metro police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar explained that “an immediate fail includes when an applicant lets the vehicle cut out during the test, bumps a pole or road traffic sign, allows the vehicle to roll at any stage of the test, disregards a road traffic sign or makes an accident.”

He added that there is no discrimination at the station and “if any official is accused of corruption or any type of misconduct”, it must be reported to the Metro police’s Internal Affairs Unit for investigation.
