Accident on Peter Road claims two lives

RUIMSIG - Jaws of life used to retrieve bodies.

Two people were killed and three others sustained minor injuries when an Opel Corsa collided with a tree on Peter Road near Hole-in-One Avenue in Ruimsig, Roodepoort.

In the early hours of Saturday morning, paramedics from ER24 came across the incident where they found the vehicle wedged up against a nearby tree and immediately notified the ER24 dispatch centre and called for extra resources.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said upon their assessment they found a man in his 20’s, believed to be the driver, dead behind the steering wheel as well as a female passenger – also about 20 years old – dead in the vehicle. “It appeared as if they were killed on impact. Three people were found outside of the vehicle.”

He mentioned that the three occupants found outside of the vehicle sustained only moderate injuries. “One of the men sustained a possible fracture to his shoulder and the other was found with a few lacerations. A third man was found walking around on scene; he later declined to be transported to hospital by paramedics.”

The two injured men were transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

Vermaak added that the impact of the collision left the two deceased trapped in the vehicle. “The local fire department had to use hydraulic equipment to free their trapped bodies from the wreckage.”
The exact cause of the incident is not yet known. Metro Police attended the scene and are busy conducting an investigation.
