Victoria Madevu was on her way home from work last Sunday (25 May) when she had a nightmare encounter with a mugger.

Madevu was walking along Albertina Sisulu Road towards her home near Laerskool Die Ruiter when she noticed a suspicious man first approaching another pedestrian and then her. The man walked up to her, drew a knife after which he demanded her cellphone. She told him that she did not have her cellphone on her.

To her surprise he then told her that it is a dangerous neighbourhood and that he would walk her home. When they reached Hamberg Dam just off Roworth Place he forced her into the facility and stabbed her nine times.

Madevu shouted for help and neighbours raced to her rescue. The man was caught but escaped again.

Three weeks before the incident Madevu also was attacked and her handbag stolen.

“My neighbours told me that it is a common occurrence in our area,” says Madevu.

She says she postponed opening a case because the police officer didn’t seem to be interested in her story.

“I wanted to save money but I definitely am considering buying a car now,” says Madevu who was still in a lot of pain during the interview.

She has asked that especially women in the area be alert. She describes her attacker as in his late 20s with “big eyes” and of less than average height. According to her he also has a scar between his eyes.
