School quiz set to benefit pupils

JOBURG – A revolutionary national school quiz will officially begin on 28 June.

Pupils from grades 10 to12 across the country are set to take part in the National School Quiz Championships (best known as NSQC) starting on 28 June to 30 July.

According to the producer of the project Ian P. Venganai, the Ruimsig-based championship is the first television quiz competition in South Africa.

“The television show is a free license to air with public broadcasters and Mindset Learn on DStv channel 319,” he added.

Venganai explained that each school will have a team of three students from grades 10 to 12 and their accompanying quiz teacher.

Venganai said the provincial quiz master is Tino Murira, who is also the co-founder of the project .

“He is managing the project. The quiz master will ask the team 10 curriculum-related and general knowledge questions, any three consecutive wrong answers will prompt the quiz teacher to assist the team and answer. If they refuse, or get it wrong, then the school is eliminated from the competition,” he explained.

Venganai said the Gauteng Department of Education is one of the major stakeholders of the quiz. “We started the project in 2012 and it is open to all high schools in the country. We have a team going to all the provinces and it will be conducting provincial trials.”

He informed that this is their first year of launching the project as they have been doing research and development since 2012.

“Any school entering for the quiz, chooses its participants. The three top pupils from each participating school makes up a team. We expect four top pupils from each province to make up a team of 32 schools for the national championships.

“We have sent letters to 1 000 schools across the country and we have a production team of eight young people who co-ordinate the project.”

Venganai said last year a pilot project was started with 40 Gauteng schools and Trinityhouse High School from Randpark Ridge was one of the participating schools.
