Library hosts Africa Day

WELTEVREDEN PARK - School children were welcome at Weltevreden Park Library to experience the African culture, in commemoration of Africa Day.

A Weltevreden Park mother Ruhi Datwani took her children to Weltevreden Park Library to learn more about the African continent, in commemoration of Africa Day.

“Both my children like and enjoy reading like I do. The African continent is rich in culture, tradition and languages which one can learn to improve his or her knowledge,” said Datwani. Her children attend Kliffview Primary School.

According to Weltevreden Park Senior Librarian Gwyneth Perry, the library celebrated Africa month by hosting a reading-time hour from 3pm to 4pm on May 21. “The theme was based on African animals and we read a book entitled African Drum by Graeme Base. We also had a puppet show of The Lion King and also listened to other African songs presented by Sandy Visser.

“Children were given an opportunity to sing and dance with African shakers, singing songs like the Lion sleeps tonight,” said Perry. From 19 to 23 May, various libraries celebrated Africa Day by hosting activities and exhibitions for people to acquire more knowledge about the different African traditions, cultures and languages.

The actual Africa Day was celebrated on 25 May.
