Expired soya milk sold to resident

Daughter opened box and noticed that the contents of the box had started to go bad as it was past its expiry date.

Soya milk that is seven months past its expiration date allegedly was sold to a Witpoortjie resident.

After buying the milk, Chantelle Myburgh’s (48) daughter opened it and noticed that the contents of the box had started to go bad. Upon inspection, she found that the best before date on the box was November 2013. However, Myburgh could not provide a till slip to confirm when she had bought it and subsequently did not go back to demand a refund.

An investigation of the store revealed that the soya milk is sold in the health foods section where 20 products were identified to either have expired or didn’t have a best before date printed on them whatsoever. Two soya milk cartons had expired on 13 May, while four cereal boxes had expired on 4 May. The other 14 packets simply had no indication of when the food might be considered spoilt.

Store Manager Shaun Botes was confronted with this evidence and was surprised to learn of the expired foods.

“It is simply unacceptable that food that has passed its expiry date is still on the shelves,” said an apologetic Botes.

“This is something that we should be checking on a daily basis.”

Botes undertook that staff will be conducting a thorough inspection of the shelves in the store and that he will be contacting suppliers to understand how products with no expiration dates slipped through their quality control measures. He encourages clients to report any problems to him and said that the customer’s DisChem loyalty cards also might reflect their purchases. Further comment will follow.
