Libraries to commemorate Africa Day

ROODEPOORT - Region C libraries will commemorate Africa Day from 19 - 23 May.

Pupils from various schools in Roodepoort’s Region C will be treated to an African cultural experience by libraries in commemoration of Africa Day from 19 until 23 May.

According to Weltervreden Park librarian Gwyneth Perry, the aim is to help children understand Africa as a continent. “It will also be an opportunity for children to experience the library,” Perry said.

Weltervreden Park, Strubensvalley, Bramfischerville, Davidsonville, Leratong, Florida and Olivedale libraries will host pupils for various activities.

“They will be told stories in Zulu, English and Tswana. They will be treated to an Indigenous Fun Day playing indigenous games with singing and dancing. Also, they will be taught about the different cultures on the continent of Africa,” said Bongiwe Nkabinde, assistant director for library and information services in Region C.

Pupils will have a chance to experience African fashion and food during a bring and share session while dressed in cultural attire. The cultural experience will also feature African folk tale stories and a puppet show.

According to the Africa Day website, the day commemorates the founding of the Organisation of African Unity, now known as the African Union, on 25 May 1963. It aims to celebrate African unity.

The 53-state union has brought together the continent of Africa to collectively address the difficulties it faces such as armed conflict, climate change and poverty.

Ruimsig Montessori Private School headmistress Janet Clarke said her Grade 1 pupils were looking forward to learning more about the continent, the different cultures and languages.

“They will be visiting Strubensvalley Library on 21 May and are excited about the trip,” Clarke said.

Different libraries will commemorate Africa Day on different days within the given dates.
