Rowing in the right direction

RUIMSIG – Maragon High School's U18 canoeist David Rodriguez rows in the right direction at the South African School Sprint Championships.

Maragon High School’s David Rodriguez represented his Ruimsig school at the South African School Sprint Championships that took place from 1 – 3 May.

Rodriguez, who is also the youngest sprinter in Gauteng, finished 6th in the highly-competitive U18 group.

Over 40 schools from different provinces took part in the canoe championships that were held at De Rust’s Stormdrift Dam in the Eastern Cape Province.

Spokesperson for Gauteng Canoe Union Jennie Dallas explained that sprints is recognised as the most important canoeing discipline, as it is the main Olympic discipline, and juniors throughout the country compete in various distances – 200m, 500m, 1 000m, and 5 000m – to accumulate points throughout the year.

Marketing Manager of Maragon Private Schools Belinda Espag said the school was proud of Rodriguez’s achievement.

“He has done so great and represented the school outstandingly well.”
