No light at the end of the tunnel yet

ROODEPOORT - Although they may be in working order, street lights on the Northside don't do what they were designed to.

Regardless of whether they’re on for 24 hours a day or barely working, streetlights are one of the biggest issues that residents currently grapple with.

Strubensvalley’s streets have been dark for the past three months, Toni Dorfling, who lives in Talent Avenue, can attest.

“I am at my wit’s end because I have contacted City Power and several obtained reference numbers, but nothing gets done about the situation,” she complained.

Weltevreden Park resident Juandré Smit reported that the opposite is true in his area, with some street lights burning on 24/7.

Smit also reported the issue to City Power, but nothing has been done about the situation to date.

“I’m aware of the issues regarding streetlights and I have escalated the matters to the responsible entity but nothing happens,” a frustrated Ward 126 councillor Mike Tonkin told Northsider.

He expressed relief in the fact that residents understood the matter was out of his hands.

“Residents are not pointing fingers at me saying that it’s my fault that these issues are not fixed,” he said.

“As a councillor, I am just the middle man. It’s my responsibility to put pressure on the entities to step up to the plate and fix service delivery issues.”

No comment was received from City Power at time of going to print.
