Roodepoort’s best bowlers battle it out

ROODEPOORT - Bowling championship delivers great talent

A men’s and ladies’ singles championships took place at Discovery bowling club on 13 April.

Sables Bowling Association marketing manager Graeme Morton said that the atmosphere became electric when players arrived at around 8.30am.

The morning session started off with Theuns Fraser from Randburg’s Leases Bowling Club facing fellow club member Bernard Beckett in a quarter-final catch-up match.

Fraser could not play the previous day when play-offs were held as he was away at a South African training Camp and therefore had to postpone this game until Sunday morning.

Fraser praised Beckett for his true sportsmanship and thanked him for allowing the game to be played the following morning.

Both bowlers played extremely well and at the end of the game Theuns came out on top and advanced to the semi-finals.

“The standard of bowls played throughout the semi-finals was fantastic and this contributed to every match being very tightly contested, with the winners only clinching their games by small margins,” Morton told Northsider.

Moving into the afternoon session, the finals were set to be a classic affair with some classy bowling from top bowlers within the Sables District. A crowd of players and spectators lined the banks of the green in support of their fellow bowlers, family and friends.

“There can be no better feeling than playing in a final with so much support and cheer around the green,” Morton commented.

“The finals proved to be a wonderful display of sportsmanship, complimented by some spectacular bowls.”
