Alleged drunk motorist rolls vehicle

Resident captures the misconduct and accident on CCTV footage.

A motorist recently rolled his vehicle on Koeberg Street after colliding with another vehicle.

A couple were travelling down Oranje Street in Witpoortjie towards Laerskool Culembeeck Primary to visit family when another vehicle skipped the stop street on Koeberg Street and collided with theirs.

Eyewitnesses and residents of Koeberg Street confirmed that the vehicle was travelling at an accelerated speed. One of the residents showed the Record CCTV footage from her front yard where it could be seen clearly that the motorist didn’t stop at the stop street. His vehicle could be seen rolling, eventually coming to a standstill on its roof. Shredded pieces of newspaper surrounded the overturned vehicle.

“He told a woman who bandaged his head that he had a drink or two,” said one of the eyewitnesses, contributing to the allegations that the man might have been intoxicated.

A paramedic explained to the police that should any medication be administered, the opportunity to breathalyse the motorist or draw blood to prove intoxication would be ruined. Owing to his minor injuries Netcare 911 paramedics took him to Life Flora Clinic for further medical care.

“Since he is being taken to the hospital as we speak, I can only open a case of reckless and negligent driving,” Constable Walters told the record on scene.

The resident that exhibited the CCTV footage was shockingly cavalier about the accident.

“This sort of thing happens so often here. You can come back and look at the evidence on my cameras at any time,” she said.

“My neighbours and I have petitioned to have speed bumps installed on Koeberg Street, from Corlett Avenue to Oranje Street to slow these reckless motorists down.”

Staying in a house on the corner of the road, her husband previously had installed precast walls so that their house and yard would be more secure against such accidents.

“My grandson plays outside in the garden and I don’t want him to get hurt because of some reckless, intoxicated driver.”
