Biker critical after collision with cross

The cross had apparently been planted alongside the road in remembrance of a fatality.

A man was left in a critical condition after apparently colliding with a memorial cross on Saturday night 19 April.

Bystanders on scene said that the motorcycle collided with a metal cross that was lying in Wilgerood Road near Ouklip Road. The cross was apparently planted on the side of the road in remembrance of a fatality that had occurred there.

“It appears as if someone deliberately ripped it from the side of the road and left it on the road’s surface,” another bystander had told an ER24 paramedic. The paramedics arrived on scene to find the man, believed to be in his fifties, lying in the road and his motorcycle wedged up against the embankment.

Spokesperson Werner Vermaak said that he was in a critical condition and had to be stabilised on scene before he was rushed to a nearby hospital for further medical care.

“The JMPD did not attend the scene, however, friends of the biker that did arrive on scene were advised to report the incident to both the JMPD and the Roodepoort police.

“ER 24’s Scene Safety unit removed as much debris from the road’s surface as possible to avoid further obstruction and damage to other vehicles.”
