Strong suspicions about workers sleeping over the verges

ROODEPOORT - Resident suspects workers use makeshift shelters to sleep along Piet Retief Road.

Verges in Harveston next to Piet Retief Road, are in a shocking state, littered with rubbish and rubble.

Gilbert Berg, a resident, complained that verges along this road are in a bad state, thanks to local workers in this area.

“I suspect that people who work in the area during the week, sleep over on the verges to save on their travelling costs,” he speculated.

He said his speculations are based on the small boxes lying on the verges, which have been constructed out of corrugated steel.

Berg also said that he called Metro police on numerous occasions, but the problem persists.

“It breaks down the image of the area and it’s a safety risk,” Berg complained.

Metro police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar confirmed that several complaints have been received. “We will work on a strategy to stop workers from sleeping on the verges.”
