Sector 3 meeting feedback

ROODEPOORT - According to stats Wilgeheuwel is the suburb with the highest crime figures in Sector 3.

A Sector 3 meeting took place on 9 April at the Strubens Valley Library to discuss concerns in the area.

Community Policing Forum chairperson Daniel Smith opened the meeting and distributed minutes of the previous meeting that took place on 12 March.

“The crime hot-spots during March were Honeydew, Strubens Valley and Wilgeheuwel. Some of the major crimes were residential robbery with firearm, residential burglary and theft out of motor vehicles,” Smith explained. He urged residents to report crime and added that the Sector 3 detective branch is still under severe pressure because they lost 10 members and gained only 2 new members.

According to Honeydew police’s Captain Andre Lamprecht, Wilgeheuwel had the highest incidents of crime during March. “Thirty-five incidents were reported for Wilgeheuwel while Strubens Valley had the second highest number of incidents.”

Smith discussed the training session for domestic workers that took place on 9 April. “Only four workers attended the meeting and we hope that more domestics will attend the next meeting that will take place in June.”

Ward 97 councillor Jaco Engelbrecht said that cable theft is a pressing concern in Sector 3. “We must be on the lookout for bogus workers who pretend to repair the cables. Owing to the high amount of theft these workers should be in the possession of a work order given to them by City Power that authorises them to work on the cables. Should they not have the required order, a sector vehicle should be called to verify their legitimacy.”

Residents raised concerns about speeding motorists on Florin Road, Roodepoort. “Residents requested that speed bumps should be erected on this road. I need to speak to Johannesburg Roads Agency first in order for them to conduct a feasibility study,” Engelbrecht said in response to the concern.
