New dojo opens in Honeydew

ROODEPOORT - Sensei Chalmers explains advantages of joining karate club

In karate, fighting with empty hands is a way of life. Two Northsiders seek to spread the word about this martial arts sport.

Bubishi Goju Ryu Karate re-opened its doors in Honeydew on 15 January, after they had moved from Eagle Canyon to Honeydew Shopping Centre in Braam Street.

Run by chief instructor, Sensei Nicholas Chalmers (third Dan Black Belt) and his apprentice, Sempi Kyle Chalmers (first Dan Black Belt), the dojo has garnered a strong reputation for producing top class of karateka (karate practitioners) of all ages and levels.

“Our goal is to create the best possible Goju Ryu karateka,” Sensei Chalmers said. The chief instructor explained that, they cater for everyone’s weaknesses and strengths. “Taking into account that each and every person who trains with us will have a different set of strengths and weaknesses, we encourage everyone to embrace their strengths, as well as to work on their weaknesses at their own pace.”

Lesson plans are based on creating a Goju base, where students are encouraged to express themselves.

“While the physical aspects of Goju Ryu karate are very important to building a good foundation, they are only a portion of what a well-rounded karateka needs,” Chalmers explained.

“Ultimately, we are looking to get the very best out of each of our students by systematically building their characters. This process is the most daunting prospect for the students, but we try to create an environment where they feel a certain amount of safety beyond the bounds of their comfort zones.”

According to Chalmers, the club serves students in the Honeydew, Strubens Valley and Little Falls areas.

“Our doors are always open and we are keen to grow the Bubishi family. Karate is a personal journey and we would love to share it with anyone interested, so we invite anyone from the ages of four, right up to adults to come and try a free lesson,” concluded Chalmers.
