Helderkruin: Elderly couple assaulted, house robbed

Previous neighbour takes the badly assaulted woman to hospital.

An elderly couple was tied up and assaulted while robbers carried out valuables from their house on Wednesday morning 9 April.

Both the residents are over the age of 80. The husband was busy mowing the lawn outside at around 9.45am when he noticed a white Volkswagen Jetta driving by slowly.

As previous neighbour Lanie de Klerk explained the situation, he must not have noticed two men getting out of the vehicle. The next moment they held two guns against his head. He was dragged into the house while the vehicle was being reversed into the driveway.

The two men proceeded to tie him up and went to confront his wife while she was busy ironing.

“She attempted to burn one of the men with the iron and the other then strangled her from behind.

“She bit him after which they started hitting her,” De Klerk told the Record.

When she came to hear of the situation, De Klerk offered to take the woman, who managed to cut herself free and run outside to call for help, to hospital. She previously lived next to the couple but had moved to another property in Helderkruin.

“She looked terrible … her nose clearly was broken, she had a lot of blood in her mouth and she had all sorts of bruises.”

She was taken to Life Flora Clinic for medical attention. According to De Klerk about five police vehicles arrived on scene shortly.

“We also pressed the panic button and Chubb was there.

“I’m not sure who gave a statement to the police, but as far as I know their daughter came home to assist her father.”

De Klerk said that wallets and cellphones were taken from the couple, “and they basically emptied the house of valuables, taking televisions and the like”.

Roodepoort police spokesperson Nonhlanhla Khumalo could not comment on the situation yet.
