New born dumped in dustbin

HONEYDEW - Mystery baby dumped in bin.

A new born baby was found dumped in a dustbin on 7 April in Bothma Street, Honeydew. The gruesome discovery was made by a dustbin searcher Anna Maphaga.

“It was at about 5:45 when I found the baby girl wrapped in a plastic inside one of the bins,” Maphaga explained.

She said the baby was still alive when she made the discovery.

“I immediately alerted the security guard at one of the complexes and the guard called the ambulance.”

While they were still waiting for the ambulance to arrive, the baby died.

Spokesperson for ER24 Ruseel Meiring, confirmed that their paramedics found a dead baby dumped in a bin.

“The baby was declared dead when no signs of life were evident,” explained Meiring. He added that their paramedics confirmed that it was a fully developed infant, evident to be no older that one month old.

The bins where the baby was dumped, is one of Monash University’s Ithemba House Student Residence.

When contacted for comment, spokesperson of the university Paballo Mosiane said they were not yet aware of the incident and promised to get back to us.

Spokesperson for Honeydew Police, Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs gave a different perspective but confirmed that they were investigating case of concealment of birth.

“That was not a baby, it was actually foetus,” said Jacobs. The warrant officer explained that because the bins were left outside, it gave room for any passerby to dump the foetus (baby) in that bin. She has called on anyone with information to come forward and assist in the investigations.
