Councillor asks for 27 hours of community’s time

Councillor wants to promote ubuntu.

Ward 70 DA Councillor Dave Dewes is appealing to the community to support his campaign to promote true democracy and the concept of ubuntu.

Dewes has created his campaign around the concept of each member of the community donating 27 hours of their year to the upliftment of their fellow citizens.

“The idea is to sacrifice one hour for every year that Nelson Mandela was in prison,” says Dewes.

“Politics is what divides us, ubuntu is what brings us together. With this campaign and the projects I have planned, the idea is to sacrifice whatever you can. If each person can use his/her expertise free of charge to help someone else we will see true democracy and ubuntu in action,” says Dewes.

“Whether you are a teacher, psychologist, nurse or social worker you can make a difference by donating an hour of your time in the informal settlements for example. Maybe you can help to clean up, teach a community how to plant vegetables, give extra maths classes to a less fortunate pupil or assist with training. Everyone has something to contribute.”

Dewes’ first project is planned for 12 April. It will involve cleaning up an informal settlement. Anyone who wants to get involved in this specific project or the 27-hour programme in general can contact his office at 011 472 1567 or email him at victorian@icon.co.za.
